The Battle of the Mummer's Ford was a Lannister ambush that destroyed a punitive expedition sent by Eddard Stark to bring Ser Gregor Clegane to justice, killing most of the Stark guardsmen and deepening the Stark-Lannister conflict into open war.

Causes and Background

In the wake of Catelyn Stark's capture of Tyrion Lannister, Lord Tywin Lannister unleashed Ser Gregor Clegane and his men on the riverlands. Disguised as common brigands, they burned the holdfasts of Sherrer and Wendish Town and massacred their inhabitants, including women and children. Survivors brought word to King's Landing, where Eddard Stark, sitting the Iron Throne in King Robert's absence, heard their testimony. Ser Marq Piper and Ser Karyl Vance identified the raiders as Lannister men led by the Mountain. Despite Grand Maester Pycelle's warning that Lord Tywin was the queen's father, Ned resolved to act. He stripped Ser Gregor of all rank and titles, sentenced him to death, and dispatched a force under Lord Beric Dondarrion to carry out the king's justice. The expedition included Ser Raymun Darry, Thoros of Myr, and a contingent of Stark household guards.

What Happens

The punitive force crossed the Red Fork of the Trident under the king's banner, but the mission was a trap. Lord Tywin had anticipated the move and laid an ambush at the Mummer's Ford. As Lord Beric's men attempted to pull back across the ford, Gregor Clegane's reavers struck them from the rear while Lannister forces fell upon them from the front. The king's banner was ignored. Ser Raymun Darry was killed, and most of the Stark guardsmen from Winterfell were slaughtered. Only Lord Beric and a few others escaped. The butcher's boy Mycah, who had fled after the incident with Arya and Joffrey, was also hunted down and killed by Sandor Clegane during the same campaign, his body brought back to Ned as a trophy.

Consequences and Aftermath

The massacre at the Mummer's Ford had far-reaching consequences. It transformed the Stark-Lannister feud from a political dispute into open warfare, as Ned's attempt to enforce the king's justice was met with naked aggression. The loss of so many of his household guard weakened Ned's position in King's Landing and left him more vulnerable to the Lannister coup that followed Robert's death.
